I was working as a research analyst for the last one & a half year in a market research firm, it was my first job and the pay was horrible but I did it mostly to learn. Over a year of working and learning about the market and how things are in a corporate world I just felt out of place somehow, I wasn’t great at what I did but wasn’t bad either I was average which somewhat bothered me. I didn’t have a decent mentor to guide me in the field of making market reports I suppose, any kind of new idea was laughed at or shamed. So maybe I was in a toxic work environment, to begin with, and it does bring you down and question your ability to do things differently. So I stuck to the job for next 6 months and then the pandemic happened and I had more workload, I wasn’t happy and no pay grade/raise insight. I never imagined my work life to be anywhere near this, it felt more like a nightmare I honestly felt like a rat, a rat who doesn’t even get the cheese in the end.
I wanted more and hence started exploring new career option which could help me get out of this trap of a situation. I read about the field of ‘User Experience’ and the more I read about it I felt somewhat connected to the field and thought this might be the field to explore. I did a course from IDF: UX designer from scratch and I felt more connected to the field now.
The UX design field felt more close to home and welcoming, also I had few friends who helped me understand the field better, which gave me confidence in myself to quit and start learning more about UX. So I put in my resignation which met with a lot of criticism from my employers and colleagues but I knew I wasn’t happy working with them anymore.
The journey began with learning about the field, reading books, and listening to podcasts. I developed my Figma skills through YouTube by following random people on the internet, and to be honest random people on the internet have taught me a lot in this journey to become a UX designer. Currently, I have a portfolio with one case study although I’m still a work in progress and looking for an internship or a full-time job. Landing your first job in the UX field is difficult as no one would trust a rookie but I’m confident I’ll find someone.
All the best to anyone who is entering the field, I understand how difficult it is to shift fields but nothing you learn goes to waste and it will always help you in some of the other ways. You’ll find a place in this world, just remember to keep on working without expecting.
Please feel free to reach out to me if you need any kind of help/support I’ll try everything possible on my behalf, and if you can give me a job, what are you waiting for? :D
